Put one toe into deadlifting
As a happy CrossFit beginner (about 6 months experience, would like to think that I have reached at least the talented level, but still call myself beginner) I have had an encounter with the weird world of lifting weight and I really do love the natural functional training of CrossFit. That combined, what could be better then to try some real world activities resembling movements from the Box?
So, off to my systers place for some construction work. They are building a porch. For that they need a solid foundation and that is where I come in. After digging away dirt to have the ground deep enough, we needed to made the soil compact. To do this we created a weight that we could drop on the needed places. The concrete block weights in at 35 kilograms and we screw a piece of wood on top to a better grip. betingplint
The number of places we hade to compress soil on was 24. And it took on average more than 20 lifts per place to get the ground even enough. That gives us: 20 * 24 * 35 = 16.8 tons of lifting.
Thank you CrossFit for giving me the skill to lift properly and the strength to do my lion share of the work (guess I did at least 75% of the lifting, i.e. lifted way more than 12.6 tons). Then you have to count in fetching all the smaller concrete plates we used to built the foundations with. Only a few kilos but you still have to lift, running with then, putting them down gently, and running back to get new one. All in all, oh what a workout!
Everything was great, until of course one of the most simple moves, I was just about to put the concrete block aside to make the sand and gravel bed when I rushed it a tiny little bit and put the 35 Kg block right on my big toe.
Oh, big pain. Toe, blue and red all over.
I do not recommend putting a toe into deadlifting. It might not look like much, but it really was pretty darn painful.
And I felt really stupid, that part hit my ego.
The great thing is that the day after I do feel the impact of physical activity and that I have really used a lot of muscles but there is no problem anywhere or any pain worth talking about (except for the toe). Thank you CrossFit, all the weight lifting and natural movement. Feels like I really have put it into good use.
And the ego still feels a bit brused but I’m trying to shake it of. Oh, the stupidity. 🙂
